As the spring weather rolls around, so too does that one task people either enjoy or dread. It’s time for spring cleaning! While you’re at it this year, why not include your vehicle?

It’s important to keep your home looking good throughout the year with regular cleaning and maintenance, however, this often isn’t enough. Oftentimes, a mess will still accumulate around your home. A yearly spring cleaning is a great practice to both get your home clean and complete any repair work you’ve been putting off.

Your Vehicle Can Benefit from a Spring Cleaning Too

Just as it’s important to give your house a yearly cleaning, so too can your vehicle benefit from the task. Below is a post from Bill Rigdon which can help get you started.

Battery

One of the most important aspects of your engine is the battery. This is for the sole reason that without the battery your engine won’t start and your vehicle’s electrics won’t function. Despite the important role it plays, a car’s battery rarely gets any attention until it’s too late. This year, spend some time inspecting the condition of your battery. A visual inspection is all that’s needed to see if something is wrong or if you just need to clean away build-up or debris from the terminals. Of course, if you can tell that your battery is on its last legs, consider replacing it while your car is in your driveway and not stuck in a supermarket parking lot.

Air Filter

While there’s no getting around the need to replace your air filter, you don’t have to visit your mechanic every time that it becomes clogged. Instead, check out an online tutorial or consult your owners manual to find out how you can replace your own air filter safely and without causing damage to your vehicle or engine. Not only can this help to reduce our vehicle’s operating costs, but it can also improve your engine performance.

Fluids and Oils

It doesn’t matter how good your engine is, it depends on a range of fluids to operate. It’s as simple as that. With this in mind, identify any and all oils and fluids your engine utilizes and include them on your car-cleaning list, keeping these points in mind:
  • Don’t just top off your fluids, replace them.
  • Flush and clean the fluid container if possible.
  • If you spill fluid, clean it up before moving on.
  • Only use high-quality products.
  • Once you have finished, store the remaining products upright in your trunk.

Wheels and Tires

Your wheels and tires do much of the work when it comes to getting you from A to B, however, they don’t get anywhere near as much attention as they deserve. During your cleaning, give your tires and wheels some of your time, keeping these points in mind:
  • If possible, take your car outside and into the bright sunlight to help you identify problems.
  • Be sure to allocate enough time and not to rush the task.
  • Check for cracks, debris which has become lodged, or any areas of your tire without tread.
  • Clean any dirt or debris off your wheels and your tires.
  • Check each tire has the correct pressure.
  • Inspect your brake pads while you’re looking at them to see if they’re ready to be replaced.

Interior

It’s just as important to clean the interior of your vehicle as it is to perform maintenance and keep its engine clean and in good condition. When cleaning the interior of your vehicle, remember that you will only complete the task once a year, so be sure to pay attention and perform the task thoroughly.
  • Despite what you might think, you can’t clean the interior until you first remove all of your personal items and those in the storage spaces throughout your vehicle.
  • The attachments which came with your vacuum cleaner can be great to help reach areas like where your pedals are, etc.
  • Be sure to wash the carpet in your trunk.
  • If you have car seats, you will need to remove them before washing them. Before you return them to your car, ensure they are 100% dry.
  • A very damp clean cloth can be used to wipe away dirt and buildup on rubber seals.
